Building Ireland’s cybersecurity skills

Munster Technological University (MTU) represents Ireland in Digital4Security, bringing expertise in cybersecurity education, industry engagement and national skills development. MTU offers an MSc in Cybersecurity Management for learners from technical, business, humanities and arts backgrounds, supporting graduates to move into cybersecurity roles with leadership responsibility.

MTU also hosts Cyber Ireland, Ireland’s national cybersecurity cluster, launched in 2019 to connect industry, academia and government and grow the Irish cyber ecosystem. The cluster is industry-led, supported by the National Cyber Security Centre, and includes more than 140 member organisations, including 40 multinationals, 90 SMEs and 13 knowledge providers. In Digital4Security, MTU and Cyber Ireland bring strong practical experience in tackling skills shortages, career pathways, leadership training and public engagement.

Our contribution

to the Digital4Security project

MTU contributes to Digital4Security through its experience in cybersecurity education, industry engagement and national skills development, with Cyber Ireland bringing direct links to Ireland’s cybersecurity ecosystem.

Our specific responsibilities include:

Needs analysis and programme design: MTU and Cyber Ireland co-lead Task 2.1, helping shape the programme around employer needs, career pathways and employability.
Programme implementation and student support: We support mentoring, industry expert input, networking events, guest lectures, and the Work-Based Learning and Employability Programme.
Communications and recruitment: We contribute to student recruitment and wider promotion, helping connect the programme with learners, employers, education providers and the cybersecurity sector.

Our mission

Cybersecurity skills are in high demand. Data from Cyber Ireland shows that the Irish cybersecurity sector is growing by 10% each year and will need to recruit more than 1,000 additional workers annually between now and 2030. ISC2 also reports that 67% of organisations face a shortage of skilled cybersecurity staff.

MTU’s mission is to develop enterprise-focused, research-informed cybersecurity education that responds to industry need and supports learners at different career stages. Its work in Digital4Security brings this experience to a European programme focused on cybersecurity management, data sovereignty and practical career pathways.

MTU will help channel graduates towards roles identified in the European Cybersecurity Skills Framework (ECSF), while supporting reskilling and upskilling across professional levels. This contribution will strengthen cybersecurity capability, build leadership skills and support more effective incident management across Europe.
